2012 - Taiwan Day 5 (24th June 2012)

Here's
Day 1,
Day 2,
Day 3,
Day 4

On day 5… We went to have hot springs, which is a MUST to have when you go Taiwan. Best to have this trip on your last few days in Taiwan so that the hot springs will calm your tiring body.

We left for Beitou (where all the hot springs are gathered in a place) early in the morning. To get to Beitou, take the mrt, specifically the red line towards Beitou Station. Alight at Beitou Station and change to Xinbeitou Station.

There are a few things you can do at Beitou while finding a good hot spring hotel - basically, there is the Beitou Library (5 min walk from Xinbeitou Station), Beitou Hot Springs Museum (1 min walk from Beitou Library) and Geothermal Valley (6 min walk from above).

Hot spring river along the way.

Geothermal valley.

You can choose either the public hot springs which cost only NTD$40, or go for private hot springs either in enclosed areas or in the comfortable hotel rooms, which have prices ranging from NTD$200 to NT$1400 for one and a half hours on weekends.
The hotel that I chose provided sulphur hot springs. After some research, this is the positive effects of sulphur hot springs…

"Water from these springs appears either yellow-brownish or milky and emits a strong smell of rotten eggs. The minerals in the water have positive therapeutic effects on skin disease, women's diseases, asthma, neuralgia, arteriosclerosis, rheumatism and shoulder, neck and wrist pains; they also have a detoxifying and mucolytic effect." (quoted from Askville, Amazon).

Free Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream too (:

After our re-energizing session, we took the train back to Shilin Night Market (士林夜市), because we missed the food section on our first day. Didn't realize the food was located at the Basement. -.-

The area was air-conditioned and super crowded. Seemed quite a bad choice to have food in the basement… The air ventilation must be super duper good lo. There isn't much variety of food, but rather there is a variety in the stalls. Basically, Shilin is famous for their Oyster omelet (蚵仔煎), Fried Chicken (炸雞排) at Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken etc etc.

Their oyster omelet is different from Singapore, whereby it's less oily, and their sauce is different (no idea what sauce is this)… Basically can just try all the food there la. . Haha. I shall let the pictures do the talking (just a few that we tried)…

Do not try this. It's horrible. The hot dog was so small, while the flour basically covered like 2-3 cm of the hotdog, giving the impression of a huge hotdog. Super horrible food.

Tons of activities for you to do there also…
Prawning. You can BBQ your wins on the spot too.

Including old-school arcade games, mahjong matching, shooting for teddy bears, shooting for MONEY and also chopper massage for the daredevil.

On our way back, we saw this super cute Japanese spritz on the train… Yes! You've read it, they allow pets on the train..

That's all for Day 5. Hope you enjoy reading!
